Nke Jang Today I went to finish painting the Harris house, I had to paint the back of the house, it was windy because their house was by a lagoon. It was so cold that I had to keep stopping every 5 minutes. When we got done they, invited us into their house where we had a tour and a brief conversation. The house was beautiful and was built from scratch. The house was flooded to the roof basically and had a boat in the yard.

Today my group the 18 year olds finished our first project. Our project was to paint a 90 year old couple’s home. We were asked to paint the whole exterior and a little of the interior of their house. The first day Monday, April 14th we completed most of the work in a few hours. So when we returned today we only had to do a few minor touch ups. After completing the touch ups we were given the chance to sit and speak to the Harris’. They had a lovely home and it was heart whelming to see their pictures and hear their story.
Sheila:
Today we went to a man named john’s house, and while we were there we built a shed. The reason why we built the shed was because he was moving some things from his house to the shed because the storm ruined his house and he now has to do repairs. Building the shed was a lot of fun but at times it was a challenge because the wood was extremely heavy and hard to lift. Even though there were many challenges it was a great experience because seeing the look at the man’s face showed how thankful he was. I would not change this experience if I had the chance and I am thankful that I got the opportunity.

Today was mixed with a lot of different emotions. We finished painting and touching up a house that was located on the lagoon. The house belonged to Mr. and Mrs. Harris. They were a couple in their 80’s and their home was destroyed by water from the hurricane. They told us that they had lived in that house for about fifty years. They seemed excited about rebuilding their home because they wanted something new. We were very proud to help completely finish the house just by painting it and adding the final touch! The homeowner were grateful for what we had done!
Nicole: Today my group and I met at the Visitation Relief Center, and from there we went to work on various different projects. First, we visited an elderly woman’s home near the beach and cleaned her yard. After picking weeds and getting our hands dirty there, we continued to the next worksite. On our way, I saw firsthand the devastation from super-storm sandy as the majority of houses were under construction and the entire town was covered in sand. When we reached the second home, a woman from the Visitation Relief Center met us with hot chocolates, a welcoming relief from the chilling air. Then we went to work on an elderly couple’s back yard cleaning excess debris. I had to cross a creek to clean the trash that had been swept in from surrounding neighborhoods. At about noon we reconvened at the relief center, and after lunch, completed numerous Easter baskets for under privileged children. Because our day ended earlier than expected, Sr. Christi and Ms. McGinn took me and my group to Rita’s to enjoy a nice reward. Overall, it was an excellent day, and I am extremely proud of the work we accomplished. I am especially enjoying getting to know my group and the fun we are having in the process.
